5-Minute Easy Coleslaw Recipe

What’s the perfect side dish for family BBQs, picnics and holiday get-togethers? This 5-Minute Easy Coleslaw recipe. A lot of slaw, in my opinion, is full of too much mayonnaise, too much sweetness or too much vinegar. This recipe is my favorite because it hits the perfect balance.

  • It’s a delicious sandwich topping. This is the best coleslaw recipe (in my humble opinion) for topping a pulled pork sandwich, BBQ beef sliders or a fish sandwich!

Of course, this homemade coleslaw is also delicious all by itself … especially after the whole mixture has had time to sit together for a while in the refrigerator.

Coleslaw Recipe Ingredients

All you need to make your own homemade coleslaw is the following simple, key ingredients. Mix it all together and … voila!

  • 16-ounce bag of pre-shredded cabbage and carrots (or two 8-ounce bags).
    • If you can find it, use a mix that includes red cabbage is best.
    • Both green and red cabbage are good for you, but the red cabbage has even more antioxidants (and it makes creamy coleslaw prettier).
  • Mayo
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Equipment

  • 1 Large Mixing Bowl
  • 1 Mixing Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 16 oz bag pre-shredded cabbage and carrots
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (I use a sugar-free mayo)
  • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • a little extra salt and pepper to taste (optional)

Instructions

  • Mix all of the ingredients together
  • You can serve the coleslaw immediately, but it tastes best if you chill it in the refrigerator before eating

Notes

A slaw mix with red cabbage, green cabbage and carrots is ideal. However, if all you can find is the bag with green cabbage and carrot mix (which is often the case for me), that works just fine for this recipe.
This tastes even better cold. Don’t worry when you see liquid in the bowl or storage container after the coleslaw has been sitting for a while. It hasn’t gone bad; the moisture in the cabbage has simply been drawn out.
